Eugene Charles Catalan (1814-1894),French mathematician. Born in Belgium (then part of the French Empire),Catalan studied in Paris and then Chalons-sur-Marne. He was a mathematics professor at the University of Liege from 1865. His work was in the fields of number theory,descriptive geometry,and combinatorics. Several mathematical concepts are named after him,including Catalan's conjecture,Catalan's constant,the Catalan solids,and Catalan surfaces.
