Met Office IBM computers. The Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service, began to use computers in the late 1950s and early 1960s. By the 1970s,they had begun to use computers from IBM that were capable of four million calculations per second. The first such was the IBM 360/195 configuration shown here, installed in 1972. This photograph, taken early that year, shows the main computer room in the Richardson Wing of the Met Office's headquarters in Bracknell. The main console is in the background. The central processing unit is at the far end of the room | |
