Met Office tabulating machines. Met Office employees sorting punched cards for use in Hollerith machines. This mechanical system is named after US statistician Herman Hollerith (1860-1929),who invented it for use in collating census data. Here,it is being used to process data on climate and weather. The data is represented by the position of the holes punched into cards of standard size. The Met Office is the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. The Hollerith machines it used included models produced by the British Tabulating Machine Company, which made devices like this between 1920 and 1959 | |
