Dye diffusion in agar. Result of an experiment with methylene blue dye diffusing through agar gel in a test tube. The dye was placed in a thin layer half way down the tube. This is the result a week later. The movement of the dye through the agar is an example of diffusion, where the thermal energy of the dye molecules causes them to move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. The rate of diffusion depends upon the substance, the medium in which it is moving, and the temperature. For the same test tube photographed at the start of the experiment, see image C011/4556 | |
