First World War British trenches. Wounded British troops in trenches. Extensive trench systems were dug by both sides during the Great War (First World War,1914-1918) as the opposing armies fought to a standstill on the Western Front in northern France and Belgium. Typical injuries would be from shell fire and sniper fire. Many millions fought and died in what was one of the largest wars in history. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. Its photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s | |
