William Pengelly (1812-1894),British geologist. Pengelly worked closely with the Torquay Natural History Society, which he helped found in 1844. It was near Torquay,Devon,England, that Pengelly excavated a cave where he discovered the remains of extinct animals in the same rock strata as human bones and tools. He concluded that humans had co-existed with the animals (rhinoceroses, mammoths, bears and sabre-toothed cats) that he had found. This proved that humanity was far older than previously thought, though it was not until further evidence was found that Pengelly's ideas began to be accepted | |
