William Buckland (1784-1856),British geologist. Buckland is holding some of the fossils he found in the UK,including the skull of a cave hyena, with nautiloid and ammonite fossils at lower right. Behind him is a cross-section of Kirkdale Cave, which Buckland had proved had been a hyena den. It was this work that saw him awarded the Royal Society's Copley Medal. This artwork is after a painting by Thomas Phillips, showing Buckland in 1833 when he was a Fellow of the Royal Society,Canon of Christ Church, and Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Oxford | |
