Volcano types, artwork. At top left is a type volcanic eruption known as a pyroclastic flow,or nuee ardente (glowing avalanche). This is a highly destructive phenomenon that consists of a very hot cloud of volcanic ash, dust and gases. At top right is a shield volcano,a large volcano with gently sloping sides. Its shape is the result of the highly fluid lava that it erupts. At bottom is a stratovolcano,a volcano that has many layers,or strata, that are formed by successive volcanic eruptions. The layers build up to form the cone shape seen here | |
