This illustration is by the British physician and botanist James Douglas (1675-1742),who wrote several accounts on saffron. This page (which includes diagrams relating to other papers) is from volume 6 of the 1734 edition of 'The Philosophical Transactions',an abridged collection of papers from the Royal Society.
