This depicts a scene in 1616 from the circumnavigation started by the Dutch explorer Willem Schouten (c.1567-1625). Schouten's planned to reach the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) by sailing west instead of east. He successfully reached Java,but his ship was confiscated by the authorities and Schouten and his men's circumnavigation was completed in 1617 on the ship of the Dutch naval officer Joris van Spilbergen.
