Jacques Cartier (1491-1557),French explorer. Cartier sailed on three expeditions to North America in the period 1532 to 1542. He made maps of the Canadian coastline and sailed up a river that he named the Saint Lawrence. His discoveries laid the basis of France's claim to the new territory. He published an account of his travels in 1545. Artwork from the 1922 edition of 'Pioneers of France in the New World' (1865) by the US historian Francis Parkman (1823-1893). This was the first volume in Parkman's seven-volume work 'France and England in North America' (1865-1892). The copyright date given here is 1897 | |
