Thomas James (1593-1635),English navigator, sea captain, and Arctic explorer. The circular inscription states that he is aged 40 here. This dates the portrait to around 1633,the year James published his account of his voyage attempting to find the Northwest Passage north of Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. James departed Bristol,England,in 1631,on the Henrietta Maria, returning in 1632 after wintering in the Arctic. The southern part of Canada's Hudson Bay is named James Bay in his honour.
