Surface of Titan. Mercator projection of an image of Titan's surface obtained by the European Space Agency's Huygens probe on 14 January 2005. Huygens arrived at Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, after a seven-year voyage from Earth. This image, from an altitude of 10 kilometres, was taken during the 3-hour parachute descent by the Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR). Titan's atmosphere is mainly nitrogen with clouds of methane and ethane. The surface is a mixture of water and hydrocarbon ice. After landing in a region called Xanadu, the probe transmission to the Cassini orbiter lasted around 90 minutes | |
