Huygens thermal cover integration. Thermal cover partly in place on the 2.7-metre-wide heat shield of the European Space Agency's Huygens probe, launched in 1997 as part of the Cassini-Huygens mission. This insulation protected the probe during its seven-year voyage via Venus to Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. The insulation burnt away during the high-speed entry to Titan's atmosphere in January 2005,with the underlying shield absorbing the heat generated. This was followed by a successful parachute descent to the surface. Construction was by the French Aerospatiale company. Integration took place in Germany | |
