In 1863 churchman Charles Kingsley wrote "The Waterbabies" a moralising tale that included human 'do-as-you-likes' de-evolving back to apes (and further) because of their careless ways. Here a composite includes Kingsley's text from the first edition together with Linley Sambourne's later illustration. In it of one of the ape like degenerates is trying to stop a (Du Chaillu like) hunter from shooting him - but is unable to speak. Kingsley found no problem believing Darwin's thesis of natural selection.
