Copperplate engraved view of the University at around the time Darwin was there. Drawn by Thomas Shepherd, engraved by W. Lizars. Published Jones and Co London in 1829. Charles Darwin studied medicine at Edinburgh University from 1825 (aged 16) to 1827. He found the lectures dull (see Darwin Jameson in this collection) and hated seeing operations before anaesthetic. In his second year he joined the Plinian Society of Natural History. He became close to the lecturer Robert Grant but at the time was shocked by Grant's transmutationist (proto-evolutionary) views. Darwin moved on from Edinburgh to study Theology at Cambridge | |
