Met Office ocean weather ship (OWS). This is the OWS Starella,an ocean weather ship operated by the Met Office,the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. It was launched in 1965 as a trawler,but was not hired as a weather ship until 1982. It was scrapped in 1989. Here,it is leaving its base for ocean weather station Lima. Ocean weather stations are fixed points in the oceans established for weather ships to take regular readings. Lima,established in the North Atlantic and North Sea in 1975,is located in west of Scotland and south of Iceland. Photographed in 1984 | |
