These personal emblems were designed by Leonardo da Vinci in his position as court artist in Milan c.1506-10. They are on the theme of constancy. The top emblem has the words 'stubborn rigour' (hostinato rigore) underneath a plough. Above the words 'Desitinato Rigore' the centre emblem depicts a compass which, although set upon a continuously turning waterwheel, its needle remains fixed upon a star. The lower symbol shows a candle in a lantern that remains constantly alight despite the winds | |
