Frozen Mars. Satellite image showing a layer of carbon dioxide ice (dry ice) covering the north polar sand dunes during the Martian winter. In this image streaks of dark basaltic sand (black) have been carried by the wind from below the ice layer to form fan-shaped deposits on top of the seasonal ice. They often form along the boundary between the dune and the surface below the dunes. Imaged by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter | |
