Wood ant (Formica rufa) nest in a woodland area. The wood ant lives in a large nest usually made from a rotting tree stump covered in pine needles and other detritus. A colony can contain over a quarter of a million ants. Worker ants bring food, usually carrion or other insects, back to the nest, following well-defined trails through their territory.
