Ernst Abbe (1840-1905),German physicist. Abbe was born at Eisenach in central Germany. He showed an early aptitude for science and his education was supported by his father and his father's employer. He studied physics at Jena and Gottingen before joining the faculty at Jena. His expertise was in optics. He worked on microscopes,creating the concept of Numerical Aperture and helping Carl Zeiss create better microscope optics. He defined the Abbe Number,a way of describing how a medium's refractive index changes with wavelength,and did much work on explaining lens aberrations | |
