French engineer, scientist and entrepreneur. He designed and made two steam locomotives for the Saint-Etienne-Lyon railway. He improved locomotive efficiency by using a multiple fire-tube boiler (patented in 1827) rather than the water-tube boiler used previously. Together with his brothers and brother-in-law he added a railway company and bridge construction business to the textile,paper,gas-lighting,coal mines and construction business inherited from his father. In 1824 they built a wire suspension bridge across the Rhone at Tournon which was much copied. He became a member of the Academie des Sciences in 1845 and recieved the Legion d'honneur in 1836. He was the author of books on the practical application of physics and mathematics to bridge building and the design of locomotive engines | |
