TEMPUR memory foam,coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This viscoelastic memory foam,made from polyurethane,was originally developed in the 1970s at NASA Ames Research Center,California,USA,to improve seating comfort and g-force protection in spacecrafts. After it was abandoned by NASA,its use was limited to medical cushions and mattresses for pressure sore prevention. It was further developed by Tempur World's Dan-Foam factory in Denmark and released for commercial sale in 1991. Magnification: x250 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
