Planck cold core survey,2011. This all-sky survey map was produced by the Planck spacecraft. This unmanned mission was launched on 14 May 2009 to study the Cosmic Microwave Background, the radiation left over from the Big Bang. While surveying the sky for ancient radiation,Planck has detected many cold cores (blue) within our galaxy. These are star-forming clouds where stellar embryos are just beginning to take shape. Planck detected around 10,000 of these cores, thousands of which had never been seen before. Some of them are the coldest ever observed, some seven degrees above absolute zero | |
