Prehistoric flint hand-axe,label close-up. This hand-axe was discovered in France in 1859 (location and date on label). The axe was studied by British geologists Joseph Prestwich (initials on label) and John Evans who presented their findings to the Royal Society. This was crucial evidence that humans were much older than previously thought. It is now thought that this hand-axe dates to around 400,000 years ago,to a time before modern humans had evolved. This hand-axe is part of the collections held at the Natural History Museum,London,UK,and was thought lost until rediscovered there in 2009 | |
