Banks insect collection,18th century. Drawer of mounted and labelled specimens of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths),part of the insect collection of the English naturalist Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820). Banks built up a collection of more than 4000 insects. Many were collected by Banks on Captain James Cook's first expedition (1768-1771). Banks presented his collection to the Linnean Society in 1804,which in turned passed it to the British Museum in 1863.
