Bladderwort in a lake. The bladderworts (Utricularia) are carnivorous plants. The underwater bladders trap small aquatic animals, such as water fleas or even small fish fry and tadpoles, which then decay into nutrients that are absorbed by the plant. The flowers protrude above the water's surface on a single stalk,as shown here, allowing reproduction. There are hundreds of bladderwort species, found in lakes and in wet soils worldwide. This specimen was observed in a lake near Villers-Cotterets,in northern France. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree' | |
