Early baby incubator. Premature baby being cared for in an incubator with the air temperature maintained at 30 degrees Celsius. The cutaway artwork shows the internal structure, with a thermometer allowing the temperature to be monitored. This model has the swathed baby lying in cotton wool, with flasks of hot water keeping the temperature warm. Piping also allows circulation of the hot air. The first incubators were developed in France in the mid-19th century,by doctors such as Tarnier and Budin.
