Sugar dehydration experiment. Sugar will decompose into carbon and water when heated or when concentrated sulphuric acid is added. This experiment involves heat being applied, and the water boils to form steam (top) and a column of carbon (black) rises out of the test tube. Intermediate stages (not shown) involve the sugar first dissolving in the initial water formed in the early stages of the reaction, and then the liquid turning from yellow to orange to brown and finally forming carbon as the last of the water boils.
