Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) engaging in a greeting ritual. These are females from the same pack, greeting each other at the entrance to the pack's den. Hyena females are larger than and dominate the males. Social interactions between females include social sniffing and social erections,as their genitals have evolved to mimic those of the males. The spotted hyena is widespread over the plains of southern and eastern Africa. Photographed in South Africa,in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park | |
