Iron lung from the 1930s,museum exhibit. This machine, dating from around 1933,was used by polio victims to allow them to breathe. Polio is a disease that can cause paralysis, sometimes of the muscles used to breathe. Until a polio vaccine became available in 1955,patients were tended in these iron lungs on dedicated hospital wards like the one shown in the photograph in the background (photographed during a 1950s polio epidemic).
