Nuclear fusion research. Beam path at the National Ignition Facility (NIF),at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,California,USA. This site is attempting to initiate and control hydrogen fusion as a sustainable energy source for future use. The beams from 192 lasers are focused onto a capsule of deuterium–tritium (DT) gas in a vacuum, producing a total energy of 1.8 megajoules. This is Laser Bay 2,which is 122 metres long. Each bay contains 96 beams (48 either side of an access gantry). Photographed in 2006. The first experiments started here in 2009 after more than a decade of construction | |
