Stephen Grey was the first to conduct electricity from one point to another. Amongst his electrical experiments Grey carried out an experiment conducting electrical current vertically from the highest point of his house. On 30 June 1729 he consulted with Granville Wheler on proposals to conduct electricity horizontally thus enabling the distance of transmission to be increased. They found that electrical current could be conducted along a length of damp hemp when it was supported on insulating silk thread. According to Priestley they succeeded in conducting current a distance of 765 feet during the experiment illustrated here | |
