Chinese armillary sphere. This is a bronze armillary sphere, dating from the 17th century. During this period,Jesuit missionaries helped advance Chinese astronomy, spreading the more accurate techniques known in Europe. Several Chinese observatories were rebuilt and equipped with modern instruments such as the one shown here. An armillary sphere has moveable interlocking rings representing the circles of the celestial sphere, and is used to demonstrate the motion of the stars around the Earth.
