Ant head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an ant (family Formicidae). The two larger blue objects are the compound eyes. They consist of many individual lenses, called ommatidia, each of which sends sends a signal to the ant's brain. All the signals are combined by the brain to form a mosaic view of the world. The image seen is not very sharp but good at detecting movements. Between he compound eyes are three ocelli,or simple eyes. The ocelli cannot focus or see in colour, but are very good at detecting difference in light intensity | |
