Brain neuron. Computer reconstruction of a medium spiny neuron from the basal ganglia of the brain. Neurons (nerve cells) are responsible for passing information around the central nervous system (CNS) and from the CNS to the rest of the body. Each neuron comprises a cell body (centre) surrounded by extensions called dendrites that collect information from other neurons or sensory cells. Medium spiny neurons account for around 90 percent of the neurons in the corpus striatum of the basal ganglia and play a key role in initiating and controlling body movements. Their dendrites are covered with numerous small spines that receive inputs from neurons outside the striatum | |
