Bladder anatomy. Cutaway artwork showing the anatomy and internal structure of the bladder. This organ receives and stores urine (yellow liquid) from the kidneys through the ureters (tubes at upper right and upper left). The urine, which contains nitrogenous waste such as urea,is stored here. The wrinkled bladder wall allows bladder expansion to contain a large volume of urine if needed. The urine is removed from the body through the urethra (lower centre) by the act of urination. The muscles and bones of the pelvic region (bottom) help to control this process. Failure of these muscles can lead to incontinence and involuntary urination | |
