Visibility recorder, also called a nephelometer. This device uses a beam of light and a light detector to measure the amount of particles suspended in a gas or liquid,in this case in the atmosphere. This allows a measure to be obtained of the degree of visibility, and how much it is reduced by meteorological phenomena such as fog, pollution,or a combination such as smog. This model is produced by the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI). The data gathered here may be used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service.
