Westgate-on-Sea Observatory. Telescope domes at the observatory at Westgate-on-Sea,Kent,England,erected from 1889 by British astronomer (Joseph) Norman Lockyer (1836-1920). Lockyer was the Director of the Solar Physics Observatory in London, and this was his country residence. At left is his 30-inch reflecting telescope. At right is the dome for his 6.25-inch refracting telescope. It was this telescope that he had used, combined with a prism,in 1868 to discover an unknown element in the Sun,later called helium. Lockyer retired in 1911 and moved to Devon, establishing another observatory there. Photographed in 1890 | |
