George Ellery Hale (1868-1938),US astronomer. As an undergraduate,Hale invented the spectroheliograph,a device used to study the Sun. He was the driving force behind some of the largest telescopes of the time,including those at the Yerkes and Mount Wilson observatories where he was director. He helped develop the California Institute of Technology into a major research centre. Hale was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1904) and the Copley Medal of the Royal Society (1932). He was also the editor of the 'Astrophysical Journal'.
