Star trails over La Silla,Chile. Time-exposure image showing the motion of the stars in the night sky around the southern celestial pole, over the La Silla Observatory in Chile. This site is operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The dome at lower left is ESO's 3.6-metre telescope, which includes the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS). The building at lower right houses the 0.25-metre TAROT (Telescope a Action Rapide pour les Objets Transitoires),a telescope that looks at brief events like gamma-ray bursts. La Silla was ESO's first observing site and still one of the leading observatories in the southern hemisphere.<br>Restrictions: | |
