Pelamis wave power machines. These machines were designed and built by the Scottish company Pelamis Wave Power (formerly Ocean Power Delivery),established in 1998. The sections (two seen here) are linked together and flex at the joining points in ocean waves, moving hydraulic rams that generate electricity conducted to shore through a seabed cable. These sections are undergoing sea tests off Portugal, and were later installed as part of Portugal's first wave farm, which closed a few months after it opened in 2008. The full system consisted of four of these sections, each 40 metres long. Photographed in September 2006 | |
