Pelamis wave power model testing, being carried out in the wave simulator at the Ecole Centrale de Nantes,France. This technology has been designed and built by the Scottish company Pelamis Wave Power (formerly Ocean Power Delivery),established in 1998. The four sections (each 40 metres long when full size) are linked together and flex at the joining points in ocean waves, moving hydraulic rams that generate electricity conducted to shore through a seabed cable. This testing led to full-size machines being installed as part of Portugal's first wave farm, which closed a few months after it opened in 2008. Photographed in September 2006 | |
