Asian hornet research. Researcher holding a trap used to attract and catch specimens of the invasive Asian hornet species Vespa velutina. This hornet, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004,and has been spreading, attacking people and preying on native honeybee species. Once a beehive is found by this species, the entire population of bees can be killed within hours. These specimens were captured during work being done by the French agricultural research institute (INRA) in Bordeaux,at the department of Plant Health and the Environment. Photographed in 2010 | |
