Asian hornet research. Researcher using forceps to extract a nymph from a nest of the invasive Asian hornet species Vespa velutina. A nymph is a stage between the larva and the adult. This hornet,also called the Asian predatory wasp,first appeared in France in around 2004,and has spread,preying on native honeybee species. Studies of this hornet are being carried out by a joint research unit (UMR) on biodiversity called 'Origine,Structure et Evolution de la Biodiversite' (OSEB).
