Asian hornet nest in an abandoned part of a house. The darker parts of the nest (made from wood pulp) are the most recently built. This is a nest of the invasive Asian hornet species Vespa velutina. This hornet, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004,and has been spreading, attacking people and preying on native honeybee species. Once a beehive is found by one of these hornets,it will leave pheromones to attract others from its nest, and the entire population of bees can be killed within hours.
