Asian hornet preying on a bee. Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) preying on a bee. After catching a bee, this hornet will kill it by biting off its head, and then begin to dismember it (seen here) and will only take the bee's thorax back to its nest to feed its larvae. Once a beehive is found by this species, the entire population of bees can be killed within hours. This invasive Asian hornet species, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004,and has been spreading, attacking people and preying on native honeybee species.
