Leeuwenhoek's microscope,17th century. This is one of the early microscopes used by the Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723). Van Leeuwenhoek produced his lenses by heating glass rods in a flame and pulling the ends apart to create small glass spheres. The smaller the spheres, the greater the magnification he could obtain. The glass spheres were mounted and fixed next to an eyepiece (the hole at top on the instrument shown here). His earliest observations were published by the Royal Society in 1673,and over the next 50 years Van Leeuwenhoek wrote hundreds of letters to learned societies detailing his discoveries | |
