Anatomy dissection,16th century. Title page of the book 'De Re Anatomica' (1559) by the 16th-century Italian anatomist Realdo Colombo. Colombo was a contemporary of the famous anatomist Andreas Vesalius, and held his position at the University of Padua for two years from 1543,though they later become bitter rivals. Columbo did important early work on models of the pulmonary circulation, and also proposed that the heart worked by contraction. This title page gives his name in Latin, refers to his birthplace of Cremona, and gives the book's title. The artwork shows Colombo (centre) carrying out a dissection surrounded by students | |
