John F. W. Herschel (1792-1871),British astronomer and chemist. John,who was the son of the famous Sir William Herschel,set up an observatory at Cape Town,South Africa,where he mapped the southern skies,studying nebulae and double stars. On his return to England,he worked on the chemistry of photography. He was created a baronet in 1838. This artwork shows him at the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS) meeting at Southampton. This meeting opened with Herschel making a valedictory address as President.
